Creating watermarks in Photoshop

photoshopUsing watermarks allows you to copy protect your photography creations.

The best way to do this is to use Photoshop actions, so that it can be either easily repeated or even better batch processed. Here's how to do it...

First create a path in the shape of your logo

  1. Create a logo that you are going to use as the watermark and create it as a new layer in a test image.
  2. This logo needs to be a silhouette in order to be used successfully.
  3. Drag the logo to the top-left of your test image.
  4. Turn your logo outline into a selection.
  5. On the Paths palette choose Make work path from selection.
  6. Save the new workpath.
  7. Delete the layer with the logo on it.
  8. You now have a path in the shape of your logo.

Create the Action

  1. Making sure that the new path is selected, open the Actions palette and create a new action.  Call it "Watermark".
  2. On the Actions fly-out choose Insert Path.
  3. Create a new layer.
  4. With the new layer selected go to the Paths palette and choose the Load Path as a selection icon.
  5. Hit Alt + Backspace to fill the selection with the current colour.
  6. Deselect the selection.
  7. For the new layer, choose Blending Options.
  8. In Blending Options: Custom, set Advanced Blending > Fill Opacity to zero.
  9. Set Drop Shadow and change the drop shadow blending mode to Screen and the colour to white, set the distance to zero, the spread to 10, and the size to 15.
  10. Set Bevel and Emboss and customise to your preference.
  11. Click OK to the Layer Style dialog box.

Now to align the logo

  1. Select All.
  2. Choose Layer > Align Layers to Selection > Bottom Edges.
  3. Choose Layer > Align Layers to Selection > Left Edges.
  4. Deselect the selection.
  5. Merge Layers (WARNING: this will apply the watermark permanently so beware).

Now to batch run the action

  1. Using Bridge, browse to the folder with your photos in.
  2. Choose Tools > Photoshop > Batch...
  3. Select the Watermark Action to play.
  4. Click OK and confirm saving settings as you go.
