Configuring with the web interface

clarkConnectYou configure your ClarkConnect server using an internet browser.



You will need a workstation connected to the internal side of the ClarkConnect server.  Initially your ClarkConnect server isn't configured for DHCP so you will need to manually set the IP address for your workstation (eg address, mask


Initial configuration wizard

  1. Browse to (you will need to add the security certificate as an exception).
  2. If you're using DNS Caching Nameserver you'll be able to browse to https://gateway:81/admin/
  3. Logon with username root and the password you set.
  4. There now follows an installation wizard.
    1. Choose Language, click Next.
    2. Edit IP address settings if you need to and click Next.
    3. Skip Registration for now.
    4. Choose your Time Zone and click Next.
    5. Enter your Domain name (eg yourdomain.local), click Next.
    6. Enter your Organization (school) details (eg system.yourdomain.local).
    7. Click Continue configuring your system. (add security certificate again).



  1. Network > DHCP:  You can configure the scope and static addresses here
    1. Set Status: Enabled
    2. Set Authoritative: Enabled and click Update.
    3. Click Edit against your DHCP ethernet card.
    4. Ensure that your Active Directory server IP addresses are first in the DNS server listing.
    5. Click Update.
    6. Change Lease Time to suit your environment (6 days is probably a good setting here).
  2. Network > Hosts and DNS Server:  Manually add all server details (eg = files.yourdomain.local) being certain to add Active Directory servers if you have them.  Check the ClarkConnect server itself too!
  3. Account Manager > Groups:  You can add groups (eg Teachers, Students and ITSupport).
  4. Account Manager > Users:  You should enter a new user account separate from the root account and make it a member of the ITSupport group.
  5. Account Manager > Administrators:  You should make the new user an administrator so that you don't have to log on as root.
    1. Select a user from the drop-down box and click Add.
    2. Select services that you want this user to manage.
    3. Click Update.
  6. Services > Register System:  You can now register the system using your online ClarkConnect account (create one if you haven't already).
  7. Services > Critical Updates:  You should apply the critical updates (this typically takes about 10 mins).
  8. Software > Web Proxy:  You can start the service and set it to automatically start on boot.  Additionally you should enable Transparent Mode.
  9. Software > Content Filter:  You can start the service and set it to automatically start on boot.
  10. Software > Web Proxy: You can now enable Content Filter.
  11. Software > Windows File and Network:
    1. Enter a Server Name (eg. Server).
    2. Enter Windows Domain (eg. yourdomain).
    3. Enter a Password for the winadmin user account.
    4. Click Update.
    5. Click Start.
    6. Enable Roaming Profiles.
    7. Logon Drive: Leave as U: This will map the users home directory (eg /home/user) to their U: drive in Windows.
    8. Click Administrator Password: Update to change the winadmin account password.
    9. The winadmin account is used for managing the Windows network (eg adding client workstations to the domain).
  12. System > SMTP Relay:  If you've installed the SMTP server on this server, you can leave the default settings.  However if you'd like to use gmail services you can with the following settings...

    3. SSL/TLS = TLS
    4. Username: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and password.
    5. It's worth noting that if you use Google Apps you can use your normal email address ie This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. will work here!
  13. Services > Software Modules:  You can install additional services here.


Joining workstations to the domain

Use the winadmin account to join Windows XP clients.


    Add new users

    You can add users one at a time (see below), or you can import many users at once.

    1. Go to Account Manager > Groups.
      1. Enter a new Group name and Description.
      2. Click Add.
    2. Go to Account Manager > Users.
      1. Click Add.
      2. Enter Username, First Name, Last Name and Password.
      3. Select Services and Groups as required.
      4. Click Add.



    Netlogon is located /var/samba/netlogon and is empty by default.
