How to manage large numbers of users

clarkConnectClarkConnect has the ability to import/export large numbers of users.  This could be a useful backup feature, or more likely an essential part of your setup.  This article shows both import and export routines.

Be aware that when you upload new users, duplicate names or usernames will not be overwritten.


Prerequisites

You will need a spreadsheet editor (eg OpenOffice.org) to create/edit a csv file.

 

Import

Importing users is a 2 step process.

Step 1.  Create a .csv file

  1. Browse to https://192.168.1.1:81/admin
  2. Log on with an admin account.
  3. Go to Account Manager > User Import/Export.
  4. Select Text File (.csv) from the drop-down and click Download template.
  5. Click OK in the dialog box, to save the file as import_template.csv.
  6. Open the downloaded file in your favourite Office suite.
  7. You may have to confirm the CSV import box by clicking OK.
  8. Enter your users' details and save the import_template.csv file.

I recommend you include the following as a minimum...

  • username
  • firstName
  • lastName
  • password
  • groups (eg itsupport, students, teachers)

     

    Enter TRUE or FALSE for allocation of the following services to each user...

    • proxyFlag - Proxy service
    • sambaFlag - Windows File and Network services
    • ftpFlag - FTP service
    • webFlag - Web services

       

      Step 2.  Import the .csv file

      1. Go to Account Manager > User Import/Export.
      2. Click Browse...
      3. Browse to your import_template.csv file.
      4. Click Upload CSV.
      5. Check the Number of Records and click Import Users.

       

      Export

      You can export your current deployment of users, for backup or redeployment purposes.

      1. Go to Account Manager > User Import/Export.
      2. Click Export as CSV file.
      3. Select Save File and click OK.
