Manage MySQL via a browser window

mysqlphpMyAdmin allows you to run any database task using an intuitive user interface.

Web server

To get started you'll need acces to a web server. This might typically be via a web hosting service, or you might have your own in-house web server. You'll need to make sure that you're using at least PHP version 5.6.

Get the files

Once you have a web server to host the files on, you can download the phpMyAdmin files.

  1. Browse to https://www.phpmyadmin.net/downloads/
  2. Download the latest version as a .zip file (5.1.1 at the time of writing).
  3. Upload and extract the .zip file to your web server, to an address that you can access (e.g. https://myschool.org/phpMyAdmin)

config.inc.php

Before you can start using phpMyAdmin, you'll need to make some configurations.

  1. Start by renaming the config.sample.inc.php file to config.inc.php.
  2. Open the file for editing.
  3. Change or add the following lines:
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost';

You will need to change localhost to the hostname of your database server, if it is a remote database server.

You will also need to create your own random 32 character password to enable cookie authentication, by editing the following line:

$cfg['blowfish_secret'] = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz123456';

Browser

Now you can browse to your phpMyAdmin instance and log in (e.g. https://myschool.org/phpMyAdmin).

  1. Enter the username and password needed to access your database.
