Configuring a dynamic IP

proxmoxBy default, your Proxmox VE server will have a static IP address, and this is nearly always best practice.  However you might have circumstances where a DHCP address is required.  This article describes the process.

Edit interfaces file

Start by logging on to the server with the root account either directly or using SSH, and run the following command.

vi /etc/network/interfaces

Edit the file, so that it looks like the following...

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto vmbr0
iface vmbr0 inet dhcp
# address
# netmask
# gateway
bridge_ports eth0
bridge_stp off
bridge_fd 0

Be warned that if you use this methodology, Proxmox VE will not display the IP address for you, you will only be able to discover the correct IP address, by logging onto the physical host as root and running the following command.

The IP address for vmbr0 is the one you need.
