Setting up iSCSI storage for an Hitachi SAN

vmwareThis article shows you how to connect your ESXi server to the Hitachi SAN using the Hitachi Storage Navigator Modular 2 (HSNM2) interface.  Note that Hitachi describes a LUN as an LU.

Create an iSCSI Target

Start by logging on to the HSNM2 interface with your username and password.  You only need to create an iSCSI target once for each SAN - ESXi host connection.

  1. In the Explorer pane, go to Resources > Arrays.
  2. In the main window, click the Array name to select it for editing.
  3. Go to Groups > iSCSI Targets.
  4. Click Create Target.
  5. Give it a meaningful name as an Alias.
  6. Select all Available Ports.
  7. With the Hoststab selected do one of the following...
    1. Select from the detected hosts.
    2. If your host isn't visible choose Enter iSCSI name manually and enter the name created by your ESXi host.
    3. Click Add and it will appear in the Selected Hosts section.
  8. On the Options tab, choose Platform - VMware.
  9. Click OK to create the iSCSI Target.

Note that this iSCSI Target doesn't necessarily have any LUNs attached to it yet.

Create a LUN

  • You need to create a LUN each time you want to have some more storage.
    1. In the Explorer pane, go to Resources > Arrays.
    2. In the main window, click the Array name to select it for editing.
    3. Go to Groups > Raid Groups.
    4. Choose the Logical Unitstab.
      1. Click Create LU.
      2. On the Basic tab, enter a size of your new LU, and click OK.
      3. Select the appropriate iSCSI target and click Add to iSCSI Target.
      4. Select all available ports and select the Logical Units tab.
      5. Under Available Logical Units, select the LU that you've just created and click Add.
      6. Your new LU will now appear in the Assigned Logical Units section.
      7. Click OK.
    5. Click Close in the confirmation screen.

    VSphere Client

ESXi now needs to discover the LUN that you've created.  Start by logging on to the VSphere client for your ESXi server.

    1. With your ESXi host selected go to the Configuration tab.
    2. Go to Hardware > Storage Adapters.
      1. Click Rescan all...
    3. Go to Hardware > Storage.
    4. Click Add Storage.
    5. Leave it on Disk / LUN and click Next.
    6. Select your new LUN and click Next.
    7. Click Next to confirm partition creation.
    8. Give your new datastore a meaningful name.
    9. Leave on Maximise capacity and click Next.
    10. Click Finish.
