Installing the SNMP agent on your Linux server

zenossFor your Linux server to be monitored you will need to install SNMP.  I used Ubuntu server 8.10 for this article.

Log on to your server.

  1. sudo apt-get install snmpd
  2. Backup your default snmpd.conf file
    1. sudo mv /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf.bak
  3. Create a new snmpd.conf file
    1. sudo vi /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
    2. Enter the following line...
    3. rocommunity public
    4. Restart the snmpd service
      1. sudo /etc/init.d/snmpd restart

    Alternative SNMP agent

You can also try net-snmp, I haven't tested this agent yet though.
