Initial config settings for Alpine Linux

coreosThere are lots of configuration settings that you might want to set. This article describes some typically settings.


Create a normal user

It is good practice to have a normal user account for everyday usage.

  1. Start by logging on with your root account.
  2. Run the following command to add a user:

adduser -h /home/steven -s /bin/ash steven
New password:
Retype password:

Desktop environment

If you are using Alpine Linux as a server, then you shouldn't install the desktop. However if you'd like to use it as a workstation, here are the commands to install a desktop GUI.

setup-xorg-base
apk add xfce4
apk add lxdm
rc-update add lxdm
rc-service lxdm start
