Creating new users for Server 2003

server2003This article describes how to create an individual user whether they are a Teacher, Student, or Support Staff.

Your own records

If you run your own database of users (that you may need for AD recovery purposes) then the first place you need to go is to add the new user here!

Active Directory

  1. Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers > YourDomain > Users (see initialising AD for this design).
  2. Right-click the relevant OU (eg IT Support).
  3. Choose New > User.
  4. Enter new user details.
  5. Enter new password (this could be password for students and Password for others).
  6. Select User must change password at next logon.
  7. Click Finish.

You may also want to enter a description once the user is created.

If you're using logon scripts, you could use Teacher.bat for teachers and Student.bat for students.

Group Membership

Ensure that the correct memberships are set up.

  1. Right-click the new user and choose Properties.
  2. Select the Member Of tab and click Add.
  3. Enter the required group (eg IT Support).
  4. Click OK and OK again.

Exchange Email Account

If you use Exchange server you will want to create a mailbox for this new user.

  1. Once the account is created, log on to your Exchange Server and go to AD (Normal AD) and find the new user.
  2. Right click on user and go to Exchange Tasks this starts the Exchange Task Wizard.
  3. Click Next
  4. Select Create Mailbox click Next.
  5. Accept defaults and click Next.
  6. Click Finish.

The user can now log on to the network and access their emails.
