Creating new groups for Server 2003

server2003Having a sound Group strategy is an essential part of developing your network with Active Directory (AD).

The Groups OU

Always use the Groups OU that you created when you initialised AD, for creating new groups.


Create a new Group

  1. Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. In AD browse to YourDomain > Groups > Subjects.
  3. Go to Action > New > Group.
  4. Enter a name for your group (eg. Maths, English etc).
  5. Confirm Group scope as Global.
  6. Confirm Group type as Security.
  7. Click OK.


Group Structure

Keep going until you have a structure something like this...

  • Groups
    • People
      • Administration Staff
      • IT Support
      • Management
      • Students
      • Teachers
    • Subjects
      • English
      • Maths
    • Years of entry
      • 2008
      • 2009


    Nesting Groups

    You can now join groups to other groups.

    IT Support

    1. Right-click the Groups > People > IT Support group and choose Properties.
    2. Select the Member Of tab and click Add.
    3. Enter Domain Admins and click OK.

    Now you need only to join a user to the IT Support group and they will have the appropriate Domain Adminsmembership too!



    1. Right-click the Groups > Years of entry > 2009 group and choose Properties.
    2. Select the Member Of tab.
    3. Enter Students and click OK.

    Now you only need to join a student to the 2009 group and they will automatically be a member of the Students group too!
