Install Acrobat Reader

ubuntuUbuntu includes a document reader, that is adequate for reading a .pdf. At the time of writing, Adobe doesn't appear to support Adobe Reader on Linux.  However this article describes how to install it on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Installation

Start by logging to your server with your username and password.  Start a Terminal session. Type the following command to add a new repository.

$ sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"

 Now you can install Acrobat Reader.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install acroread

Say Yes to make Acrobat Reader the default application for .pdf files.

Tidy Up

It's good practice to now remove the repository...

$ sudo add-apt-repository -r "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
$ sudo apt-get update

Configuration

If you need to manually set Acrobat Reader as the default application for .pds

$ sudo vi /etc/gnome/defaults.list

Add or change the following lines...

application/pdf=acroread.desktop

application/fdf=acroread.desktop
application/xdp=acroread.desktop
application/xfdf=acroread.desktop
application/pdx=acroread.desktop
