How to block browser add-ons

windows XPIn particular, students will sometimes try to use VPN add-ons in a browser. This article describes how to stop this activity for Chrome.


Google Chrome adm and admx policies

Start by logging on with a local administrator account. Then download and extract the following file:

gpedit

Now you can run the Group Policy Editor.

  1. Click the Start button and run gpedit.
  2. In the Local Group Policy Editor, right-click on Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates and choose Add/Remove Templates...
  3. In the dialog box, click the Add... button.
  4. Browse to your unzipped folder, and select /windows/adm/en-US/chrome.adm
  5. Close the dialog box.
  6. In Local Group Policy Editor, browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Classic Administrative Templates (ADM) > Google > Google Chrome > Extensions.
  7. Double-click Configure extension installation blocklist to open it for editing.
  8. Click the Show... button
  9. In the first row, add an asterisk (*) to block all add-ons.
  10. Click OK and then OK again.

Now when you use Chrome, all extensions will be blocked.
