How to configure Google Apps

googleThere are many different configuration settings for Google Apps, we'll just look at some of the more obvious ones.


Email

  1. Browse to the Dashboard at https://www.google.com/a/yourdomain.com
  2. Click on the Activate email link.
  3. Use your web host cPanel tool (or equivalent) to change the MX entry for your domain name to ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM (some hosts require the full name ie you will need to include a full-stop at the end of ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.) with a priority of 10.
  4. Click on I have completed these steps.
  5. This is likely to take approximately 1 hour to complete.

 

Branding

  1. Browse to the Dashboard at https://www.google.com/a/yourdomain.com
  2. Click on Domain Settings.
  3. Choose the Appearance tab.
  4. Change the Header Logo by uploading a new one and choose show this logo in all sites that users create.

 

Contact Management

  1. Browse to the Dashboard at https://www.google.com/a/yourdomain.com
  2. Click on the Add more services link.
  3. Choose Contacts.

 

Change URLs

Use your web host cPanel tool (or equivalent) to create subdomains.

  1. Mail:  Create a new subdomain (eg mail.yourdomain.com) and redirect the subdomain to (eg http://mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.com).
  2. Calendar:  Create a new subdomain (eg calendar.yourdomain.com) and redirect the subdomain to (eg http://www.google.com/calendar/hosted/yourdomain.com).
  3. Documents:  Create a new subdomain (eg docs.yourdomain.com) and redirect the subdomain to (eg http://docs.google.com/a/yourdomain.com).
  4. Contacts:  Create a new subdomain (eg contacts.yourdomain.com) and redirect the subdomain to (eg http://www.google.com/contacts/a/yourdomain.com)
  5. Sites:  Create a new subdomain (eg sites.yourdomain.com) and redirect the subdomain to (eg http://sites.google.com/a/yourdomain.com)

 

Change URLs (with webhost involved)

Alternatively you can ask your webhost to change CNAME records for all your required URL changes.

  1. Browse to the Dashboard at https://www.google.com/a/yourdomain.com.
  2. Click on the Email link to enter the Email Settings area.
  3. Click on the Change URL link.
  4. Click on Change URLs for all domain services.
  5. Change all services as required.
