Manage GMail using Outlook

googleYou may like to use Microsoft Outlook to manage your emails.  This article describes the process of setting up a GMail user account, for access in Outlook.


GMail configuration

Start by logging on to Google Mail, using your normal account.

  1. Go to the Cog > Settings.
  2. Select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  3. In the IMAP Access section, Enable IMAP.
  4. Click the Save changes button.

 

Outlook configuration

Start by opening Microsoft Outlook.

  1. Click the File tab.
  2. On the Account Information screen, click Add Account.
  3. In the Add Account dialog box, add the following information.
    1. Your Name:
    2. E-mail address:
    3. Password:
  4. Click Next.

Outlook should automatically set the account up for you, but if it doesn't select Manual setup or additional server types.

  1. On the choose service screen, choose POP or IMAP.
    1. Enter Your Name, and E-Mail address.
    2. Select Account type:  IMAP.
    3. Incoming mail server: imap.googlemail.com
    4. Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.googlemail.com
  2. Click the More settings button.
    1. Select the Outgong server tab.
    2. Select the option for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
    3. Select Use same settings...
    4. Click the Advanced tab.
    5. Incoming server: 993
    6. Incoming server encrypted connection: SSL
    7. Outgoing server encrypted connection TLS
    8. Outgoing server: 587
  3. Click OK
  4. Click Close.

NOTE: You need to select the type of encrypted connection for the outgoing server before entering 587 for the Outgoing server (SMTP) port number. If you enter the port number first, the port number will revert back to port 25 when you change the type of encrypted connection.
