Search Engine Optimisation with sh404SEF

joomlaExtensionsSearch Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a big subject, that we won't cover in detail here. Suffice to say that Joomla has various extensions for SEO.  The sh404SEF extension turns your dynamic URLs into easy to read (Search Engine Friendly) URLs.  Learn how to install Joomla extensions to get yourself started.

Visit the Joomla extensions site to review sh404SEF and to get the latest version.


  1. Download the latest version of sh404SEF from Joomla Extensions site.
  2. Install the component.
  3. Change your htaccess.txt file to .htaccess (it lives in the root of your website).
  4. Go to Site > Global Configuration and select the Site tab.
  5. Enable Search Engine Friendly URLs.
  6. Go to Components > sh404SEF and switch to Extended display.
  7. Click sh404SEF Configuration.
  8. Main tab, choose Enabled - Yes.
  9. Plugins tab, set Insert content table - No and Show Section - Yes.
  10. Advanced tab, change the rewriting mode to with .htaccess (mod_rewrite).


Here are some of the configurations that you will want to make straight away.

  1. Go to Components > sh404SEF and switch to Extended display.
  2. Choose Meta Tags and then Home Page Meta.
  3. Enter your own Title, Description and Keywords tags.


If you get "Forbidden Access - flooding", try...

  1. sh404SEF > sh404SEF Configuration, Security tab.
  2. Select No for Activate Security Functions.
  3. Set Check also forms data (POST) to No.

Save your settings, you may be asked to clear the site cache afterwards.
