Installing Let's Encrypt with Joomla

letsEncryptLet's Encrypt allows you to secure traffic to your website.  This article describes how to encrypt a Joomla website.

Create an SSL Certificate

You'll need to create an SSL Certificate for this domain.  Here's how to use Let's Encrypt with Siteground hosting.

Configuring Joomla

We will start by editing the htaccess.txt file.

  1. Browse to the root directory for the website.
  2. Rename the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess.
  3. Open the file for editing.
  4. Add the following content to the top of the file.
# The following is needed for SSL Certificate
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

Now that the file is .htaccess, you can enable URL rewriting.

  1. Login to the back-end of Joomla.
  2. Go to System > Global Configuration.
  3. Select the Site tab.
    1. Under SEO settings, enable Use URL rewriting.
  4. Select the Server tab.
    1. For the Force SSL option, choose Entire site.
