Configuring email to use SMTP

qdPMBy default, qdPM uses PHP mail to send system emails to users. SMTP appears to be more reliable, so this article describes how to use it with Google mail services.

Email account

It's a good idea to specify an SMTP email account, rather than use your everyday account. You can then allocate it a complex password that might be changed less frequently. Here are some examples:

  • This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

It is perhaps worth noting that in the event that your site gets hacked, this user account details is visible unencrypted in the configuration table.

Configuration

Start by logging on to your qdpm website with an admin account.

  1. Go to Configuration > General > Email Options.
  2. In the SMTP Configuration section make the following settings:
    1. Use SMTP: yes
    2. SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
    3. SMTP Port: 465
    4. SMTP Encryption: ssl
    5. SMTP Login: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    6. SMTP Password: yourPassword

With SMTP configured, you can now test your settings.

  1. Go to Users > Send Email.
  2. Enter a Subject and Message, and select Admin to send a test message to yourself.
  3. Click the Send Message button.
